F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Convention Fans blog?
A: Convention Fans is a blog dedicated to people who attend fandom conventions (also known as “cons”). Whether you are a seasoned convention veteran, or new to the whole scene, the Convention Fans blog will have information you can put to good use! Into Harry Potter, Star Trek, anime, Twilight, comic books, fantasy, sci-fi? Convention Fans covers cons for all major fandoms (and even some of the obscure ones).
Q: Who writes/works for Convention Fans?
A: Kelly (a.k.a. “dreadpiraterose“) is the writer and creator of the blog. She frequently works with a photographer, Dan Fowler, and sometimes has associates contribute special articles or convention reports. But unless otherwise stated, everything on the blog is written by Kelly. She is a 26 year-old editor based in Philadelphia, and long time con goer. Kelly is a member of the Simming League (a “United Nations” of online role-players), and is a retired member of the United Space Federation (a Star Trek role-playing group). She also used to play World of Warcraft quite a bit.
Q: How can I contact someone at Convention Fans?
A: E-mail Kelly, the writer and creator of Convention Fans, at dreadpiraterose [at] gmail [dot] com.
Q: I think I’ve seen articles from this blog before on Fark.com…?
A: Articles from this blog have been featured on Fark.com, Daily Kos, Fandango.com’s Movie Blog, numerous fan sites, message boards, and blogs. The blog was also mentioned in CNN’s coverage of Dragon*con 2009!
Q: How much traffic does Convention Fans get?
A: Convention Fans was the top traffic Today.com blog for December ‘08, January, February, and June ‘09, and was Editor’s Choice in October ‘09. Interested advertisers should inquire about specific traffic figures directly (dreadpiraterose [at] gmail [dot] com).
Q: Will you promote my convention?
A: Feel free to contact Convention Fans and provide us with all of the information on your convention. This should include a website and the dates at the very least (feel free to send us press releases too). If you provide at least some basic information, we’ll more than likely write an article about your con, and post your press releases.
Q: Will you attend our convention?
A: That depends! Is it within a reasonable driving distance of Philadelphia? Then there’s a good chance we might. If it’s further away, it may be taken into consideration based on time and travel, and compensation. Contact Convention Fans with details and we’ll talk about it.
Q: Can I advertise on Convention Fans?
A: You sure can! Today.com, the network that hosts Convention Fans, has a great advertising interface and multiple options for those who wish to purchase ads. Click to view the Advertising section of the blog.
Q: How can I find out what conventions you will be attending?
A: A list of upcoming conventions we’ll be attending can be found on the Con Appearances section of the blog.
Q: How do I subscribe to Convention Fans?
A: There are multiple ways to subscribe to the Convention Fans RSS feed, including Twitter, e-mail, Google, and LiveJournal. Check out the Subscribe section of the blog for a full list of RSS subscription options.
Q: Can you tell me what conventions are near my city?
A: We don’t maintain a comprehensive list of all conventions, because we know someone who already does! You’ll want to head on over to the Green Tentacles Convention Finder, where you can search for conventions based on zip code or genre.
Q: Do you know how much celebrities charge for their autographs?
A: If we have purchased a particular celebrity’s autograph in the past, we can probably give you an estimate. But in all honesty, Google is your friend in that department. We don’t maintain a list, and the price does tend to change based on the celebrity’s contract with the convention in question.
Q: Where can I can find your convention reports and photos?
A: Blog entries related to conventions we have personally attended can be found in the On-Site Convention Coverage category. For all convention reports, which are sometimes written by guest contributors or are simply collected feedback from multiple sources (that are not us), you should visit the Feedback & Con Reports category. All of our photos can found at the Convention Fans flickr account.
Q: What if I have a question that wasn’t answered here?
A: Feel free to send an e-mail to Kelly, the writer and creator of Convention Fans, at dreadpiraterose [at] gmail [dot] com.
