Con Vids: Great YouTube Videos from Dragon*con 2009

Now that Dragon*con is almost two full weeks behind us, a lot of great videos from the convention are being posted to YouTube. I’ve already posted links to the full Nimoy/Shatner panel videos, and video from the World Record Thriller attempt, but there are plenty more great videos from the convention that deserved to be mentioned!

The first video I wanted to post comes from YouTube user jkgvader. In honor of the aforementioned Thriller attempt, jkgvader and her friends filmed a “Star Wars Thriller” video. What they created was an endearing parody of the original musical video, which also showcases a lot of different Dragon*con attendees demonstrating their Michael Jackson moves. You’ll see appearances by stormtroopers, Quidditch players, and Abe T. Alien, just to name a few. It starts off a little slow, but the I thought the overall video was funny and well done.

Convention Fans @ Dragon*con: Official Thriller World Record Attempt Video Posted

Dragon*con has posted their official Thriller World Record attempt footage on YouTube! It’s pretty similar to the footage I linked to the other day, with the exception of the inclusion of a Michael Jackson cosplayer at the front. Their video is below. Congratulations to all of those involved, and to the organizers who made it possible! As soon as official world from Guinness comes down the line, you can bet I’ll be posting about it here on Convention Fans!

Con Vids: Videos From the Now Infamous TwiCon 2009 Q&A Session

Earlier this week, I reported on the whole TwiCon 2009 debacle (and “debacle” is putting it sort of nicely). One of the big complaints to come out of the event, was that Saturday’s Q&A session with the Twilight actors was cut in half! The reason? It took way too much time to actually get the attendees into the ballroom, causing the Q&A to start 30 minutes late. Instead of pushing back other programming, the organizers simply cut the Q&A short.

For those of you who decided not to attend TwiCon 2009, it’s safe to say you were probably better off. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a peak at what happened! Some TwiCon 2009 attendees have started to post videos from the now infamous Q&A session onto YouTube, and I have gone ahead and posted some of the best of them below!

Con Vids: Doctor Who Convention Videos

It’s been a while since I highlighted some great video footage from conventions! This time, I’ll be posting some videos from some of the absolutely fantastic Doctor Who conventions from around the world. One of the great aspects of a fandom like Doctor Who is that it has so many iconic characters, from the Doctors themselves to the many alien races bent on Earth’s domination. All of which provide great inspiration for skits, cosplays, and videos.

The first video comes from the Gallifrey 2009 Masquerade competition. The skit is called the “Timelord Retirement Club” and won The Judges Choice Award. It is a very funny and well acted skit! One word of warning: some girl decided to scream bloody murder as the Doctors were taking the stage, so I *highly* recommend you keep it on mute until the skit actually starts (and a word of advice to anyone filming videos for YouTube: DO NOT SCREAM INTO THE CAMERA. It makes people not want to watch your video at all.).

BlizzCon/World of Warcraft Convention Videos

One of the conventions I am dying to attend is BlizzCon, which is the official convention for all things Blizzard (World of Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft). I definitely won’t be going this year (unless I win the lottery), but fortunately YouTube has a ton of great videos from BlizzCons of years past.

The first video is from BlizzCon 2007. It features an interview with the infamous “Leeroy Jenkins.” He talks with Epileptic Gaming’s djWHEAT all about World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and what’s going on in “Leeroy’s” life. The video is about 7 and a half minutes long.

——————-

The second video is also from Epileptic Gaming’s 2007 BlizzCon coverage. It includes some video clips of the “Sound Alike” Contest and the “Dance” Contest. All of these contests are now staples of conventions with any sort of World of Warcraft or MMORPG programming. Not everyone can make it out to BlizzCon in California, so conventions like Dragon*con (for example) have started adding some MMO (and specifically Warcraft) programming and events - which seem to get exponentially more popular each year.

——————-

The next video is from BlizzCon 2008. It features Join Railvas, from WoW Radio’s (wcradio.com) WarCraft Anonymous, interviewing gamers on the convention floor.  I like these montage videos that show a lot of the convention, from the vendor rooms, to the corridors, the people milling about and lining up. It gives you a sense of just how massive these cons are. The video is just over 7 minutes.

——————-

Finally, here’s another video from BlizzCon 2008, featuring the boys of WoW Radio, goofing around in their hotel room. To be honest, sometimes the best convention moments are spent with your friends, hanging out in the hotel. Just a warning, there’s a bit of language in this one (might not be work safe), along with some camera thrusting (definitely not work safe).
