Nekocon Cosplayer (photo by Arnett Gill/flickr)It’s been a while since I had a chance to put a news post together (blame Zenkaikon!). There are plenty of convention updates and news to report, including tidbits on the official Xena: Warrior Princess con, Pacific Media Expo, Nekocon, Nerdpow!, Steamcon, and more!

1. Xena Convention Adds Four More Guests

Creation Entertainment announced yesterday that it has added four additional guests to their stellar line up for the official Xena: Warrior Princess convention, now in it’s 15th year. Steven L. Sears, Tsianina Joelson, Katherine Fugate, and William Gregory Lee are those latest additions. They are joining Lucy Lawless, Renee O’Connor, and others. It’s being held February 5-7, 2010 in Los Angeles, California.

2. DJ/Fashion Designer Takuya Angel Hits Pacific Media Expo

One of my favorite bloggers, Liz Ohanesian, has a report from Pacific Media Expo, which was held November 6 - 8, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. She met up with Takuya Angel, a Japanese designer and DJ who creates “unusual pieces that cross over between the wa (traditional Japanese) and cyber styles popular in Tokyo clubs.” Be sure to check out Shannon Cottrell’s amazing pictures that are posted with the article.

3. Nekocon – Extremely Local Con Is Extremely Local

A writer at fuzakenna.com has posted a convention report about Nekocon, a Virginia convention that occurred last weekend. Apparently this convention is a bit of a snooze fest, at least in the eyes of this convention reporter. Here’s a snippet from his write up: “I honestly kind of regret buying 3-day passes because the con is pretty shitty and there’s not really anything to do tomorrow, but hell, it’s a weekend, and I paid for it, so I’ll at least go for a while.” Click the link above for the rest.

4. A&G Ohio-Presents NERDPOW!

A&G Ohio, an Ohio based anime convention, is hosting a special event this weekend called Nerdpow! The festivities start at 12 noon on Saturday, November 13, and will go on until 12:30 am Sunday morning. There will be nerdcore and video game bands such as: The Protomen, Super 8 Bit Brothers, MC Router, My Parents Favorite Music, Dual Core, Shammers, Oxymoranatron, Mc Cool Whip and the Mochajaro. Visit www.NerdPow.com for more information.

5. Seattle-based Steampunk Convention a Sign of the Genre’s Potential In Alaska

The University of Anchorage student newspaper, The Northern Light, has an article about Steamcon, a recent Seattle based steampunk convention. The piece notes that Steamcon was so popular that they had to turn potential attendees away due to maxing out the capacity of their venue. It also postulates the future of steampunk fandom in Alaska, and whether the success of the Seattle con is a sign of growing interest in that general geographic area.

6. London Expo 2009 Wrap-up

The website anientity.co.uk has a convention report on London Expo 2009, which happened a few weeks ago. The author notes that anime and manga “tend[ed] to take over” the convention in 2009. However, they noted that queuing went a lot easier when compared to 2008 - that’s always a good thing to hear. Check out the link for the full report and photos from the convention.

7. Pre-Reg is Now Open for Con-G

Last, but not least, the organizers for Con-G are happy to announce that pre-registration for the convention is now open. Con-G is happening February 20-21, 2010 in Guelph, Ontario. Guests include Savage Bandito and comedy group the The 404s, with more expected to be announced. Pre-registration is just $20 for the weekend.
