News Blurbs: Big Apple Comic-Con, Animation Asia Conference, and More
There has been a few new convention related articles posted the past few days, which is why I’ve decided to do two “Convention News Blurbs” articles this week. Admittedly, there was quite a bit coverage to come out of Big Apple Comic-Con, which was last weekend. Fall is, of course, considered part of the convention busy season.
This entry has articles about Big Apple Comic-Con, the Animation Asia Conference, Bakuretsucon, and it concludes with one called “Anime Conventions: Does Size Really Matter?”
1. Big Apple Comic Con is a Wonderful Guilty Pleasure
The Leader has an article about Big Apple Comic-Con, which their Entertainment Editor in Chief seemed to enjoy quite a bit. Although, he did point out some of the downsides of hitting up a con: sore feet and an empty wallet. He also commented on the pricey autographs, which many of us are all too familiar with. Nothing in this review was unexpected, but if you’re interested in feedback from this con, the article is worth a look.
2. Animation Asia Conference Announces Media Partnership with Anime News Network, Animation Magazine, Adoi Magazine, Asia Image, Content Asia and Kidscreen
The Anime News Network announced that it is partnering up with the Animation Asia Conference, as are a few other entities. The conference is happening November 20, 2009 at the Suntec Singapore International Exhibition and Convention Centre. The topic of the inaugural one-day business conference is “Globalisation of Asia’s Soft Power”. Tickets are SGD$480. Visit www.afa09.com/aac.html for more information.
3. A Shaky Start to the Convention Experience
Held Action, a blog dedicated to table top gaming in New England, shares a story about their first convention experience, and how it didn’t exactly go as planned. That first convention experience was at Bakuretsucon 2002, in Vermont. It is an interesting read, especially if you’ve ever had a rough con experience (and I’m sure we all have - or will - at some point).
4. Would You Want an Anime Convention in Bakersfield, California?
That’s the question being posed by a commenter at the Diet Convention blog. He says he’s got plans to write a letter to the city, but as one commenter advised him, he should be writing to the organizers of big anime cons instead. If you have some advice for this guy, head on over there and leave a comment on his entry.
5. Big Apple Comic Con: Little Geek Haven
This is more of the coverage resulting from Big Apple Comic-Con, and it comes from Jaimie Campos at Poptimal. It’s a great comprehensive review with some pictures from the weekend. This reviewer recommends the Shopping Alley, the Artists’ Alley, the line-up of celebrities, and the panels. What’s the problem then you ask? “[Big Apple Comic-Con] isn’t the spectacle that NYCC and SDCC are.” There you have it.
6. Anime Conventions: Does Size Really Matter?
A blogger dares to ask the question: does size really matter for anime cons? The author has over 15 + years of con-going experience, and basically lays it all out there for anime fans to decide for themselves. It concludes with a list of things all con-goers should keep in mind, no matter what size convention they decide to attend.
