News Blurbs: Anime League Club London, Kuzuricon Drama, FUNimation Info, and More!

Published by dreadpiraterose at 4:48 am under Convention News Blurbs Edit This

With all the hubbub about New York Comic Con and Big Apple Comic-Con running the same weekend in 2010, I feel compelled to start the week off with news from conventions other than those two. This edition has the latest convention news about FUNimation, William Shatner, Kuzuricon, and Anime League Club London (ALCL). It also has a link to the “8 Geek Conventions God Never Intended.” Okay okay, at the very bottom is a quick update about the New York Comic Con and Big Apple Comic-Con feud. But it’s only one link, promise. What can I say? Everyone was talking about it this weekend!

1. Anime Convention in London on 14th November: Just £5 Entry, Signup Now

Although Convention Fans is based in the United States, we try to keep tabs on all of our international con-going friends. Anime League Club London (ALCL) is holding a convention in London on Saturday, November 14th, at The Slug and Lettuce (1 America Square, London, EC3N 2LS). As the title suggests, it’s only £5 to get in, but you do have to be 18 and up. You can register for ALCL at http://www.animeleague.com/london/registration.php.

2. FUNimation Virtual Convention Panel

FUNimation, which normally has quite the busy convention schedule, decided to host a “virtual” convention panel in October, since they didn’t have any cons to attend for the month. It was held October 15th on FUNimation’s blog. You can watch the replay of the virtual panel at the link above. What a great idea! Kudos to FUNimation!

3. Exclusive Interview With William Shatner | William Shatner at Comic-Con This Weekend

Two authors over at www.haveuheard.net had a chance to chat with Star Trek’s William Shatner, who appeared at Big Apple Comic-Con this past weekend. One part of the interview I just have to share: when Shatner was asked “Was there any particular guest star that stood out to you?” his response was “Most of them were blond.” Way to keep it classy Bill! Be sure to read the rest of the interview, although I just gave you the most interesting/amusing exchange.

4. Kuzuricon Backstage Drama: An Interview With Founder Joe Wall

Kuzuricon’s original founder, Joe Wall, sits down for a chat with www.screenhead.com, and describes how the convention was taken over. The whole situation is relayed in a very convoluted manner, but what I got from the article was that the founder signed Articles of Incorporation with people, who he then attempted to fire, but they shot back with a cease and desist from a “lawyer” (Wall isn’t sure the person who contacted him was a legit attorney). The con ended up happening, but without Wall’s involvement. If you know more about the situation, feel free to elaborate in a comment.

5. How to Survive Your First Anime Convention

eHow has a new article up called “How to Survive Your First Anime Convention.” The article also had sidebar list of essential items to bring along, including water, camera, maps, snacks, and of course… $$$. It is a fairly comprehensive article, with 11 bullet points worth of information. It’s definitely worth a read if you’re considering venturing out to an anime con but just haven’t worked up the courage to yet. Don’t worry. The otaku don’t bite.

6. PathetiCon: 8 Geek Conventions God Never Intended

Cracked.com put out an article about the 8 most “pathetic” conventions back in July, but since I just found it I figured I’d share anyway. One of the items on the list is The Klingon Feast, which just proves that the article’s author doesn’t like fun. One I do agree with is The Richard Hatch Cruise. I lost faith in Battlestar Galactica’s Richard Hatch after he sold out and appeared on the new relaunched BSG series. If you saw him at a con in the years before the new BSG, you know he had invested a lot into a relaunch of his own. Then when the SciFi Channel announced their reboot, he was against whole thing…until they offered him a paycheck. Bad form Richard. That makes you a hypocrite dude. He, of course, sings a different tune now. Anyway, I can’t say I agree that these are all “pathetic” conventions, since I’m pretty much a “whatever floats your boat” kind of gal, but I can see how some of these might weird out the more moderate geeks among us.

7. New York Comic Con Responds to Big Apple Con 2010 Scheduling

And last, but not least, we have New York Comic Con’s response to Big Apple Comic-Con scheduling their con for the same weekend as them in 2010. In short, it was basically “bring it on bitches!” Seems like NYCC isn’t worried about losing any patrons to their competition. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
