Battle of the New York City Conventions: New York Comic Con vs. Big Apple Comic-Con

Big Apple Comic-Con vs New York Comic Con (NYCC)

Large cities tend to have numerous fandom conventions that occur throughout the year, and New York City is no exception. However, with there being so many weekends in a year, you’d think each convention would have its own moment in the sun. That won’t be true for New York Comic Con (NYCC) and Big Apple Comic-Con in 2010. For some reason we can’t quite fathom, the two conventions will be occurring on the same weekend in 2010: Oct. 7-10.

This may not bode well for Big Apple Comic-Con, seeing as how NYCC is now one of the largest conventions in the United States (77,000 in in attendance). Of course, bigger doesn’t always mean better, which may drive fans to choose to spend their hard earned dollars at Big Apple Comic-Con instead.

No matter which con comes out on top, you can bet this won’t be the end of this growing feud between owners Wizard World (Big Apple Comic-Con) and Reed Exhibitions (NYCC). Word is the friendly professionalism once enjoyed by those involved in both conventions has gone by the wayside, as evidenced by NYCC staffers allegedly being escorted out of Big Apple Comic-Con yesterday. Ouch!

Is New York City large enough to support two fandom conventions in the same weekend? Only time will tell, but NYCC has a pretty good head start when it comes to attendance figures.

Big Apple Comic-Con is happening this weekend at Pier 94 in New York City. It features numerous sci-fi, fantasy, sports, and comic book guests, such as William Shatner, Kate Mulgrew, Brent Spiner, Thomas Jane, Joe Simon, Joe Quesada, John Schneider, Yogi Berra, Adam West, Nichelle Nichols, Linda Hamilton, Aaron Douglas, and more.
