News Blurbs: Wil Wheaton, EXP Con, New York Anime Festival, and More!
Happy Wednesday con-goers! As usual, we have lots of convention news to share with you all today. We have guest announcements, convention reports, and articles a plenty. The first news blurb concerns the King of All Geeks, Wil Wheaton! This post concludes with an op-ed article on which of the large conventions gives attendees the “biggest bang for their buck”. The list may surprise you!
As always, if you have any convention news (or even photo streams) you’d like to share, post a comment!
1. Con Update: Media Guest: Wil Wheaton
The only Star Trek: The Next Generation actor we haven’t met, Wil Wheaton, will be returning to Emerald City ComiCon in 2010. He has attended for the past few years, and clearly seems to enjoy himself while he’s there. Emerald City ComiCon is happening March 13th and 14th, 2010. We’re totally jealous of you West coast people!
2. Anime fans feed hobbies at EXP Con in St. Augustine
EXP Con, an anime convention, was recently held in St. Augustine, Florida. News Jacksonville was there to cover the event, which apparently had around 2,000 attendees (pretty impressive for a small con). Did you know the con was organized by a 21 year-old? Check out the article for quotes from this young convention organizer!
3. Con Report: New York Anime Festival 2009
Anigamers.com has posted their New York Anime Festival 2009 convention report. As the report reminds us all, this was the last year for NYAF, which is being “folded” into New York Comic Con for 2010. The reviewers were once again impressed by this con’s programming, but disappointed by scheduling itself. Be sure to read their full report for all the nitty gritty details!
4. Anime All The Rage in the River City
West Virginia’s Channel 13 news offers up coverage of Tsubasacon, which was a three day anime convention held at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. The article is short and sweet, but it does list attendance figures and the con’s charitable nature. (Short and positive coverage is better than lengthy disparaging coverage.)
5. NekoCon XII (12) Anime Convention
HamptonRoads.com has an article about upcoming Virginia anime convention NekoCon XII. The con is expected to draw around 3,500 people to the Hampton Roads Convention Center, November 6-8. The article details the various activities con-goers can enjoy, such as the artist auction and vendor areas. Appearing at NekoCon XII is Greg Ayers, Tony Oliver, Echostream, and more.
6. Sakura-Con 2010 announces first musical guests
Sakura-Con, one of the biggest anime conventions in the United States, has announced their first musical guests for their April 2-4 convention. And who are they? Dazzle Vision! Dazzle Vision is a Japanese band that released their first album “Origin of Dazzle” in November of 2006. Their second album “Camellia Japonica” was released in April 2007, followed by an 11-city tour of Japan.
7. Which Mega-Convention Gives The Most Bang For Your Buck?
Here’s an article that we should all probably read, especially given current economic times! If you’re suffering in this economy like everyone else, definitely check out io9’s article on which large scale fandom convention gives you the largest value for your hard earned cash! Not surprisingly, Dragon*con and San Diego Comic-Con on the list. What was surprising was entry number 10, a con I had never even heard of.
