Couple Weds at Comic-Con 2009 - Complete with Darth Vader Giving the Bride Away
Just before San Diego Comic-Con 2009, I posted an interview with the absolutely adorable Ramona, who was planning a wedding ceremony to happen at the convention! She and her beau, Jesse, had decided to have a very special (and geeky) wedding ceremony to celebrate with their friends and some immediate family. As you may recall, Ramona promised to come back and share with us how it went, as well as provide some photos! And as you can see, she did just that.
Convention Fans would like to extend a heartfelt “congratulations” to Ramona and Jesse on their geeky nuptials! We wish them many many years of nerdy wedded bliss! We’d also like to thank them for letting us share their special day with all of Convention Fans’ readers.
Below is Ramona’s break down of how the ceremony went, organized into “the good”, “the mildly bad”, and “the ugly.” Read on for all the details, and to see more great pictures!
The Official Ramona and Jesse Comic-Con Wedding Recap
written by Ramona herself!
The Good:
- Jesse (My fiance) said “I do!”. Best part of the day, hands down.
- A gentleman by the name of Felix gave me away, dressed as Darth Vader. He was a real sweetheart while we were waiting, and talked me out of my nerves, made sure I wasn’t peeking and was generally just wonderful, I really owe him. I didn’t think I would cry but as soon as he put on his helmet and offered me his arm, I burst into tears! And now, because of our ceremony, he wants to become a registered officiant so he can perform weddings, which I think is insanely cool.
Our very close friend Josh was to be our officiant, and he almost backed out at the last moment because of nerves. Luckily, he went to the bar and pounded two shots for a little liquid courage, and I am so glad he did, because he did a fantastic job. He couldn’t pronounce my last name (which is okay, I can barely pronounce my last name lol) and everyone had a good giggle when he called me “Ramona Hot-Oatmeal”. My favorite part of his sermon though was when he said “Whoever does not believe these two should be married, shut the hell up and leave comic con forever”.
- Our two best men dressed up as Jedi’s and boy did they look snappy
my sister went as Jet Girl From Tank Girl
- Since we were doing this at a convention Center, there wasn’t a ton of beautiful spaces to have our ceremony, so we ended up on the terrace overlooking the Ocean & Coronado (SO gorgeous BTW). A number of 501st and Rebel Alliance formed an aisle, and everyone hummed the Medal March from Star Wars (where Han and Luke receive their medals from Princess Leia). It was nerdgasmic.
- A bunch of random people showed up to watch us get married, and a few of these people had video cameras! So we have the whole ceremony on tape as well as photo.
- THE CAKE. OMG THE CAKE. No fondant, no frosting, just CHOCOLATE EVERYWHERE over a raspberry and vanilla and almond multi-layered cake. Considering I never even MET the lady who made it, I am absurdly impressed and will recommend her to everyone.
- We didn’t really discuss what we were supposed to do AFTER the vows, so Jesse and I ended up just walking back into the gaming room haha. And we forgot to exchange rings, but hey, we got to kiss again!!
- The restaurant we went to had DELICIOUS food. But for a 20 person party, we only had one waitress, and she wasn’t very good. It didn’t really put a damper on things until we realized the next day that she had overcharged us $40 friggin dollars for a steak dinner and beers we never even saw!
- I forgot, up until the very last second, about pictures. I ended up asking my sister’s friend to take them.
- I also forgot my slip for the dress, and my heels. And the dress was wrinkled from the 100 mile drive it endured. And Jesse spilled his entire “L.A. Water” drink on me at the end of the night. But other than that, it was all ok.
The Ugly:
- Nothing. Besides some minor snafu’s, it was wonderful. We are still totally over the moon about it.
