This is a Great Weekend for Star Trek Fans in the North East!
If you happen to live anywhere near Philadelphia or New Jersey this weekend, and you happen to be a Star Trek, YOU are in luck!
The first event is taking place at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Avery Brooks, who played Captain Benjamin Sisko on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, will be taking part in a discussion about “race, science fiction and other themes in a wide-ranging and fascinating dialogue” on July 31 (that’s TODAY!) at 7 p.m. He’ll be joined by Temple University professor Samuel Delany. Admission is $5.00. Interested parties should call 215-448-1254 to register (click here for more info). Apparently this event is now sold out!
The second event this weekend, is Creation Entertainment’s Official East Coast Star Trek Convention, happening this weekend in Parsippany, New Jersey. The guest list includes: Leonard Nimoy, Suzie Plakson, Connor Trineer, Kate Mulgrew, John Billingsley, Jeffrey Combs, Marc Alaimo, J. G. Hertzler, and Robert O’Reilly. I want to remind you all that J. G. Hertzler, and Robert O’Reilly will be appearing in their Klingon costumes! You can even get a picture with the pair in costume for $65!
The schedule for the Official East Coast Star Trek Convention is now available at the convention’s website. Admission is available at the door.
As a side note: I’m not paying Creation Entertainment’s inflated prices for any of their conventions (which means I won’t be going to this convention in New Jersey this weekend as originally intended). You can read an extended explanation of why via my article, “How Much is Too Much? The Increasing Costs of Conventions.”
However, if YOU decide to attend Creation’s Official East Coast Star Trek Convention, please post a comment and tell us how it went! Maybe you can change some of our minds?

I met Avery Brooks a few years back at a Slanted Fedora convention outside of Philadelphia that also featured many others including Connor Trinneer. Avery is an entertaining speaker and very charismatic.
I have to see the Trek exhibition at FI before it closes in September. Wow, I should have been visiting more so I could have coerced my younger trekkie brother to come this way for a visit, I’ll check out the schedules.
