News Blurbs: Vampires, Zombies, and Otaku, Oh My!
As usual, there’s been a lot of convention news coming out over the past week, and Convention Fans is here to deliver the goods! We’ve got more Otakon and Twilight con news (as usual), more about Shore Leave 31, along with some zombie and anime con news!
1. On Shore Leave: Posts from Allyn Gibson
I wasn’t the only blogger at Shore Leave 31 this past weekend. Allyn Gibson has three days of posts about the sci-fi con on her blog. She details the events she attended, and gives of recap of the con in general. If you want to know how the con went for another fan, definitely head on over to her blog. (There are multiple entries, so scroll down to view them all.)
2. New York Anime Festival to Show ‘20th Century Boys’ Trilogy
The New York Anime Festival, which is being held September 25-27, 2009, is going to be showing the ‘20th Century Boys’ movie trilogy. They will debut the final of the three movies on the last day of the convention. 20th Century Boys is based off of a manga by Naoki Urasawa. The manga is available in the US via Viz Media. All three of the films are being co-presented by VIZ Pictures and Subway Cinema.
3. Otakon Has Higher than Expected Pre-Registration Numbers
This weekend Otakon’s PR team sent out a press release, detailing the pre-registration numbers for Otakon 2009. A staggering 17,985 people have pre-registered so far. According to the release, this is up nearly 800 people, or 4.6%, from last year. What recession? Otakon’s president has said he is expecting around 27,000 people to attend this year. If you haven’t pre-registered yet, now is a good time to do so. Also, pre-registration badge pick-up for 2009 will be open one hour later than usual (until 11 p.m. on Thursday). Pick-up begins at 5 p.m.
4. Pittsburgh Zombies Reclaim World Record
This isn’t exactly convention news, but I do know a lot of my fellow con-goers have much love for the undead. Apparently there has been a bit of competition going on between the zombie lovers in Pittsburgh, and the zombie lovers in Nottingham, England. Well, in case you haven’t heard, “the zombie walk held at the Monroeville Mall outside Pittsburgh, PA on October 26, 2008 has been certified by Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest Zombie Walk with 1,341 participants” - thus taking the crown from Brits! Nice job Pittsburgh!
According to the press release I got: “This year’s World Zombie Day will take place on Sunday, October 11 with the hub once again at the Monroeville Mall. Cities around the world are lining up to participate in this charity event to raise awareness of global hunger. Participants in the zombie walks are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation.”
(For those doing the walk, be sure to check out the Convention Fans article Zombification 101 - What You Need to Know to Become a Zombie.)
5. EyeCon Twilight Adds Alex Meraz to Celebrity Lineup
For those of you who prefer fangs over brains, you may be interested to know that EyeCon Twilight has added Alex Meraz to their guest list. Alex is apparently “the hot new werewolf” of the franchise. This con is being held September 25 - 27, 2009. Tickets are an outrageously priced $295.00 for “platinum” seating, or as low as $45.00 for a one day ticket.
6. TalkingTwilight.com Convention Announced
From their release: “TalkingTwilight.com would like to announce that it is holding the first annual Twilight convention at the Holiday Inn Convention center by Portland airport August 28th – August 30th, 2009. The confirmed actors for this event so far include Peter Facinelli, Edi Gathegi, Gil Birmingham, Alex Moraz, Christian Serratos, local actress Ayanna Berkshire, and Rob Pattinsons body and photo double Logan Welch!” That’s right sparkly vampire fans - there is yet another Twilight con to attend, and Robert Pattinson’s body and photo double is probably the closest you’ll get to Pattinson himself this year.
