News Blurbs: Apollocon, Comic-Con, Otakon, PAX, and More!
It’s time for your weekly round of up of all the convention news that’s been going on! I’ve got links to convention reports, guest announcements, and more. You’ll find news about Apollocon, Comic-Con, Otakon, PAX, Long Beach Comic Con, and HeroesCon below.
1. Filk, 501st, and Cosplay at Apollocon 2009
First up is an Apollocon 2009 convention report posted by Simone Kern. She explains her unfamiliarity with terms like filking and cosplay (and her subsequent education as to their meanings), as well as her disappointment with the con’s party scene. I want to share one of my favorite quotes from her report:
But the people I met on Saturday don’t just hope the world will become a better place, they donate their time and money to ensure that it will. That’s why I got so pissed off when, while grabbing a bite to eat before the masquerade, a businesswoman at the hotel bar noticed my press badge and asked with the utmost derision if I was there to “watch the Trekkies.”
Fuck her and her ilk. Everyone I met on Saturday was friendly, intelligent, and hilarious, and they had the courage to get their kicks how they liked, no matter society at-large might think.

2. SDCC ‘09 - Middleman, a Talent Search, TV Panels, Toys and More
This is an article from Robot 6 that is all about the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con 2009. They have a great little list of recent con announcements in terms of vendors, studio tie ins, appearances, con exclusives, and more.
3. Long Beach Comic Con Announces Full Guest Slate
ConventionScene.com has posted a press release for Long Beach Comic Con, which details their initial guest list announcement. That list includes Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk) Martin Klebba (The Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy); Rob Van Dam, (Former WWE / ECW Superstar); Christy Hemme (TNA Wrestling Diva); Darcy DeMoss (Friday the 13th VI & VII); Meredith Salenger (Race to Witch Mountain); Luciana Carro (Battlestar Galactica); Herb Jefferson Jr. (Battlestar Galactica); and more! They also have a list of comic book artists slated to appear as well. Check out the link for all the details.
4. Con Report Round-Up: HeroesCon 2009
Yet another great link from ConventionScene.com, this is an absolutely fantastic list of what seems like all of the convention reports posted on the Internet for HeroesCon 2009. It includes blogs, flickr photo sets, and videos. Thanks to ConventionScene.com for putting something like this together!
5. Otakon Announces Yukio Kikukawa, Hidenori Matsubara, and Noboru Ishiguro as Guests
Otakon just keeps cranking out those guest announcements! Looks like it is going to be a very good year for them. The most recent announcements were for Yukio Kikukawa, Hidenori Matsubara, and Noboru Ishiguro, all of whom are involved in the production of some very popular animes, including “Space Battleship Yamato”, “Macross”, and “Oh My Goddess!”. 6. Ron Gilbert To Keynote PAX 2009
Penny Arcade’s convention, PAX, has announced that Ron Gilbert, “who has become legendary for his work on classic LucasArts adventure titles like Maniac Mansion and the Monkey Island titles” will be giving the keynote address at the con. PAX is happening September 4 - 6th, 2009 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center.
