Steamcon: A 2009 Seattle Steampunk Convention
I have to admit, I really wish I lived on the west coast (or had tons of money) so I could attend Steamcon this year! Steamcon (as the name implies) is a Seattle convention dedicated to steampunk. It is taking place October 23 - 25, 2009 at the Seattle Airport Marriott hotel. (And as a side note, I absolutely love the look of the website! Kudos to the web designer, who really did a wonderful job.)
Here are some of the events and activities currently in the works: a vendor’s bazaar “packed with exotic wares”, an art exhibition, “The Perpetual Teatime and Hospitality suite”, The Magic Lantern Theater, discussions on all things steampunk, gun modification demonstrations, lessons in etiquette, steam technology exhibitions, games and “diversions of a role playing nature”, as well as cabaret acts presented by “the esteemed Mr. Bodewell”.
Guests include Tim Powers (author, The Anubis Gates), Paul Guinan (artist), and Abney Park (musical act).
Tickets for the convention are available now via the website. An adult weekend pass is currently $40, and a teen weekend pass is $20. There is also a “patron” level ticket for $100. From the site:
Full weekend prices are broken down by age:
* ‘child’: Children under 6 get in free.
* ‘teen’: Older children and teenagers, 6 and over, but under 18, are half price.
* ‘adult’: Adults 18 and up are full price. We also offer a ‘Patron’ level membership, at $100 per person, regardless of age. This level gets you a membership, a special gift, a mention in the program book and many more perks including VIP queue avoidance.
There are a block of convention rate rooms at the host hotel, the Seattle Airport Marriott. The special rate is $109.00 a night. Enter “stestea” under group code on the Marriott availability form, or mention “Steamcon” if reserving by telephone (1-206-241-2000).
For more information, be sure to check out the official Steamcon website. You can also follow the con on Twitter. As always, if you attend this steampunk convention, be sure to post a comment with links to your photos, videos, and convention reports!
