Colossalcon 8 Photo (photo from http://thehistoryfollower.wordpress.com)It’s been another busy week for convention news and updates. But let’s face it, from now until Thanksgiving or so it’ll stay pretty busy! Today I’ve got some new tidbits on Otakon, Horror Realm, Star Trek cons, and more. Let’s get to it!

1. A Colossalcon 8 Con Report

One of my fellow convention bloggers has a really great report about Colossalcon, an anime, gaming, and Japanese culture convention in Ohio. The con was held June 4 - 7. The report is quite detailed, and discusses everything from the atmosphere, to the fact that the con used wristbands for attendees instead of badges. He also has some cool photos from the con as well. Definitely a good read! (Part 1, Part 2, Photos)

2. Horror Realm Announces its 2009 Independent Horror Feature Film Contest

Horror Realm is a Pittsburgh, PA horror convention happening September 18-20, 2009. They have just announced a horror film contest, and the winner gets a film distribution package provided by R2 Films. From the official release: “There is a $35 non-refundable entry fee. The top 3 finalist entries will be screened during the convention followed by announcement of the winner.”

3. Conventional Wisdom: TrekMovie Guide To Summer 2009 Conventions & Events

TrekMovie.com has a great article posted that lists all of the Star Trek conventions happening this summer. This list also includes conventions like Dragon*con, that are not “Trek only” cons, but do have Trek stars on the guests list.  This is definitely a must read for you Star Trek fans.

4. Madhouse Director Masao Maruyama to Return as Guest to Otakon

From the press release: “The founder and creative director of the award-winning Madhouse Studios, Masao Maruyama, a recurring guest and longtime friend of the convention, will make his seventh appearance in Baltimore at Otakon 2009.” For more information about Madhouse, go to http://www.madhouse.co.jp. (Otakon Official Site)

5. Madhouse to Create Animated Short for Otakon

Along with the recent announcement that Masao Maruyama of Madhouse will be returning to Otakon, is a second announcement that his studio will be creating an exclusive animated short for the convention. From the release: “This year’s segment is co-directed by Takuji Endo (Paranoia Agent, Highlander: Search for Vengeance) and Yoshinori Kanemori (Death Note, X); Kanemori also serves as character designer. The short will feature Otakon’s mascots, siblings Hiroko-chan and Hiroshi-kun, who were the focus of last year’s opener.” (Otakon Official Site)
