The Top 20 Sexy Male Science Fiction Costumes
As my regular readers may recall, a few months ago I stumbled upon an article called the Top 20 Sexy Science Fiction Costumes (link no longer works). I disagreed with a lot of the choices. But it occurred to me that it wasn’t really fair to just feature the sexiest sci-fi costumes for the ladies, without doing a list for the men as well! I solicited some feedback and additional opinions (from girls and guys), and I am ready to unveil the list!
Note: The original ladies’ list included live-action comic book costumes. A good argument could be made that they are their own genre and shouldn’t count, but since the original list included them, I will do the same here. As with the other list, I also did not include animated costumes. It had to have been worn by someone in the flesh!
And remember, we’re talking about the costumes here, not the men wearing them!
The Convention Fans Top 20
Sexy Male Science Fiction Costumes
| 20. James Marsters as Captain John Hart - Torchwood (2008): This costume is fun mix of historical garb and modern day jeans, topped off with a gunslinger belt and some kick ass boots. The mixture of eras and the bad boy appeal of the ensemble has earned this costume its spot at #20. |
|
| 19. Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-n-Furter - Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975): Don’t let anyone fool you, this costume is the real reason people keep going back to see Rocky Horror Picture Show Saturdays at midnight. How can anyone resist the allure of the leather corset, fishnets and high heels?! | |
| 18. Brandon Routh as Superman - Superman Returns (2006): There was some debate between my cohorts and I over this one. The basic design and colors of the Superman costume are really dated when compared to the rest of the costumes on this list. But does anything else show off a man’s overall physique in quite the same way? This belongs on the list for sure. | |
| 17. Ralph Fiennes as John Steed - The Avengers (1998): A stylish black suit, bowler hat, and sword? Hot hot hot. A classy little number like this is always sexy on a man, and Ralph Fiennes worked it well. | |
| 16. Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker - Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983): This costume was mentioned multiple times to me in my discussions with my readers. This black costume is sleek and mysterious, and does way more for Mark Hamill’s sex appeal than that neon orange flight suit, that’s for sure! |
|
| 15. Christian Bale as John Preston - Equilibrium (2002): Black suits may dominate this list over all, but the white suit Christian Bale was rocking in Equilibrium made him look totally hot. It is quite similar to a formal military uniform, which certainly contributes to its sexiness. | |
| 14. Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator - Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): Before he became the Governator, Arnold breathed new life into the biker look. Leather pants, black shirt, jacket and shades = a classic sexy bad boy costume. | |
| 13. Will Smith as Agent J - Men in Black (1997): You can’t tell me the gentlemen from Men in Black didn’t look sexy in their black suits and slick shades. Yes Agent J, it does indeed “look good,” which is probably why Ray-Ban sold a shit ton of sunglasses in 1997. | |
| 12. Keanu Reeves as Neo - The Matrix (1999): Is it the skin tight black pants? The trench coat? The shades? Maybe it is the entire package. Either way you look at it, Neo’s costume from The Matrix trilogy was incredibly hot. | |
| 11. Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan - Watchmen (2009): What’s sexier than a man in his birthday suit? A glowing neon-blue radioactive birthday suit! (Optional: the black man-thong) | |
| 10. Ricardo Montalban as Khan - Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982): Hello pectoral muscles! Who needs Captain Kirk’s torn uniform when you can have this sexy little number on the bridge of the Enterprise? Of course, it’d be incomplete without the giant Starfleet insignia necklace hanging ever-so-perfectly between those pecs! | |
| 9. Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds - Firefly (2002): This one made the list by popular demand. Maybe it’s the suspenders and the high waist pants? Or perhaps the holster hanging perfectly on the hip? Either way, I couldn’t ignore the hordes of ladies (and men!) who asked for this costume to be put on the list. | |
| 8. Ben Browder as John Crichton - Farscape (1999): You may be charging too much for your autograph Ben Browder, but I guess you get away with it because you strutted around on Farscape wearing this hot leather vest and pants! I’m sure this costume helped earn you quite the fan following. | |
| 7. Jason Momoa as Ronon Dex - Stargate: Atlantis (2004): This is another addition to the list thanks to popular demand. There’s something about the “roguish” look that people really find appealing! This costume is leather hotness, from the wrist cuffs to the vest! And let’s not forget the all-too-popular “dirty-looking but actually clean” pair of pants! | |
| 6. Jamie Bamber as Lee “Apollo” Adama - Battlestar Galactica (2003): Technically this costume was worn by numerous members of the Battlestar Galactica cast (including the women), but I felt it appropriate for Apollo to be the one to represent it (he is the series dream boat, so I am told). The double thick tank top isn’t enough to hide those pectorals and washboard abs, and it displays the biceps quite nicely, don’t you all agree? |
|
| 5. Vin Diesel as Riddick - The Chronicles of Riddick (2004): This is another tank top number, but the sleek black goggles helped it climb above the Battlestar Galactica costume. If we’re being honest though, Vin Diesel could pretty much make any costume look sexy, am I right? | |
| 4. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones - Indiana Jones Movies (1981 - 2008): Gotta love that rugged adventurer look! The iconic hat, the wip, the slightly unbuttoned shirt… Oh yes, it’s totally sexy. But I know what you’re thinking. “Indiana Jones isn’t science fiction!” This is where I must remind you that the horrible crystal skull movie you’ve tried so hard to forget does in fact exist, and that it most decidedly crosses over into the realm of sci-fi. Sorry. | |
| 3. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine - X-Men Series (2000-2009): This is another costume that was technically worn by more than one actor, but for those who find sharp and shiny objects sexy as well, I’ve picked Wolverine here to represent this leather X-Men uniform. It hugs the body in all the right places, and its structured look makes it less like a Star Trek style jumpsuit, and more like a suit from an extreme sporting event. | |
| 2. Christian Bale as Batman - The Dark Knight (2008): No, this isn’t the nipple suit from that other Batman movie. I’m talking about the much improved costume from the new Batman movie series with Christian Bale. Goodbye bat-nipples! Hello new hotness! | |
1. Harrison Ford as Han Solo - Star Wars (1977): Providing perfect symmetry with the female costume list, Han Solo’s rugged space outlaw costume finds that its rightful place is at number 1. You gotta love the way the pants hug Ford’s |

So how did the Spartans from 300 get left off the list? Honestly, that movie was responsible for 2007 being the year of an army of eye candy for us straight girls at Conventions everywhere - most notably Dragon Con. Usually, we get a little hotness scattered throughout the day. But it sure was a sight to see a hot Spartan regiment coming at you. It was very nice indeed. Plus! That movie was single handedly responsible for motivating a new level of fitness amongst our fanboys. YAY 300!!!!
@guenthecat
I don’t consider 300 to be sci-fi. Batman and Superman do have sci-fi elements at least, even though they are considered primarily as “comic book” genre films.
Glad to see Frankie in the list!
I do think that for guys, the costume isn’t as important as the person/hunk inside - because so many “costumes” on this list rather look the same to me.
… I am quite fond of Captain Mal Reynolds, but wouldn’t find his costume sexy. Him, yes. Costume, no.
@*lynne*
I think it depends so much on what appeals to you. If you like the western/cowboy/rogue look, then I think the costume is sexy. If you’re more into the fishnets and high heels thing, probably not so much.
to be fair to Browder, it’s Creation that’s jacking up the prices for his, and Claudia’s, autograph; and if fans keep being willing to pay such a ludicrous amount of money there’s no incentive for Creation to drop the price.
@Sydney
He doesn’t have to patronize Creation cons either… goes both ways!
Mal needs to be top 3 at least, Will Smith is also too hot to ignore, definitely before Keano. Sorry I don’t really agree with your list at all D: It needs a helluvalotta more work.
@Disappointed
Remember…it’s about the costume, not the man wearing it.
