Cons from A to Z: D is for DEFCON, DiversiCon, and DucKon

Published by dreadpiraterose at 2:29 am under Cons from A to Z Edit This

Letter DIt’s time for the fourth edition of the Cons from A to Z series! I’ve been working with fellow con goer Nathan Lilly, who runs the Green Tentacles Convention Finder website (that’s his green banner to the left) to bring you this fun series of articles. If you’re interested in finding a convention that’s near you, Nathan’s website offers searches via zip code and content tags, so it is quite easy to find a convention nearby, which is why he’s the perfect partner for this series.

Together, Nathan and I will be bringing you “Cons from A to Z” which will go through the entire alphabet and highlight a handful of conventions for each letter. This is a great way to bring some attention to some of the smaller or more unique conventions out there. And the letter for today is “D”!

DEFCON: http://www.defcon.org/
July 31st, 2009-August 2nd, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV 89109

In my About this Blog section, I mention that I try to cover all the major fandom conventions, as well as the obscure. Well, this might be one of the more obscure. DEFCON calls itself “The Largest Underground Hacking Convention in the World.” The convention has some rather unique activities and events, such as WI-FI shoot outs, robot contests, TCP/IP contests, movie marathons, sleep deprivation, spot the fed contest, lock picking, warez trading, drunken parties, charity dunk tanks, scavenger hunts, and a Black and White Ball. Admission is $120 USD at the door.

DiversiCon: http://www.diversicon.org/
July 31st, 2009-Aug 1st, 2009 in Saint Paul, MN 55108

Diversicon provides programming and social opportunities to encourage the multicultural, multimedia exploration and celebration of science fiction (SF) by those within and outside of the traditional SF community. It is sponsored by SF Minnesota. Diversicon’s programming—typically three simultaneous tracks—focuses on literature but also includes items related to film, TV, comics, art, science, and other subjects. Science fiction, fantasy, horror, and slipstream/magic realism genres are all represented. Guests include Kay Kenyon Michael Levy, PhD, and Sandra Lindow. There is a dealer’s room and an art show as well.

DucKon: http://www.duckon.org/
Jun 12th, 2009 - Jun 14th, 2009 in Naperville, IL 60563

Guests for DucKon include Jim Butcher, Loren Damewood, Seanan McGuire, and Shannon K. Butcher. Online pre-registration is now closed, but at-the-door memberships may be purchased at the con for $50. Programming tracks include: Anime, Blinkie, Filk, Furry, Gaming, Klingon, Literary, Media, Odd Duck, Science, Special Events, Writers, and Young Fan/Childcare.
