Hand Model on the Twilight Book Cover to Appear at Eye Con Twilight 2009

Published by dreadpiraterose at 2:02 am under Convention Info Edit This

Twilight Book Cover, featuring the hands of Kimbra HickeyYes, you read that right: the model who’s hands are featured holding an apple on the Twilight book cover is attending the Eye Con Twilight convention in Florida this year. (The hand model’s name is Kimbra Hickey.)

I swear, I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.

What I want to know, is why someone even thought to book this woman for the convention. Really, what was the thought process there? Did rabid fans send letters to the convention organizers begging for them to invite her? How did they find out that pair of hands belonged to Kimbra Hickey in the first place? Do people keep track of this kind of stuff?

What’s next? Do we invite the guy who had his fingers featured on the Saw II poster to a horror convention as a guest?

Even better, she’s actually going to be doing photo ops! So, will it just be of her hands? Or will the photo with her include her face too? Will she be holding the apple? The photo op with Kimbra Hickey will cost you $30.00. But wait, there’s more! Her photo backdrop will be the Twilight book cover! (That way you don’t forget who she is.)

And as a general complaint: the Eye Con Twilight website violates “DON’T” rule #3 of my Dos and Don’ts of Convention Websites article (purple text on a black background, especially when it’s that small, is difficult to read). This is not your MySpace page! It’s a professional website, where you are trying to get fans to turn over obscene amounts of money for an already overpriced convention! At least make it easy on the eyes!

Okay, I’m done ranting now.

And before the Twilight fans come after my blood (get it?), let me just say I have nothing personal against Kimbra Hickey. I just think it’s absurd to bill her as a guest, and charge people $30 to get a picture with her. I think that’s exploiting the fans, especially when it already costs so much to attend.

Edit: Thanks to a commenter on reddit.com, who linked to this interview she gave to “Pop Star,”  just in case you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be “The Hands of Twilight” or find out what they did with the apple after the shoot. I don’t know about you, but these riveting questions have certainly kept ME up nights! Thank goodness I know the answers now!

You’ve got to admit - it’s fucking hilarious.
Obviously, they believe people will pay for this
    ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ photo op.
Is that the sad part - or is that
people WILL in fact, fork out $30.
    - I mean, I would…
Tough economic times, I dare say.

This reminds me of a Seinfeld episode. Hand models… Oh wait, I think it WAS a Seinfeld episode. Maybe the fans and organizers are too young to remember George Costanza’s hand modeling career…

your bias against hand models? those hands were on millions of book covers. you dont think that makes it significant?

    are you daft?

what do you mean “how do they find out”? You think that cover photo was just something the publisher foudna t the bottom of his desk? A lot of professionals, not just the model, do a LOT of work to put together a cover, from concepting to mockups to casting to photography sessions… why are you being such a dick and saying that this is stupid?

besides, dont you think a hpto op with the hand model would be neat? much mroe interesting than with an actor, imagine the possibilities.

$30? Not even if she was giving handjobs.

    @ #4 (Whats with)

    Are YOU serious?

Anyone willing to pay $30 for a photo op with someone whose face is neither famous nor even seen ONCE on TV or print, needs to have their head examined.

Nothing wrong with hand modeling, someone has to do it…. but do we need to give a shit afterward to the point of paying good money to get a picture taken with them?

    Absurd.

LOL n00b to conventions. At New York Comic Con this year, they had the guy who said “these aren’t the droids we’re looking for” in the first Star Wars as a guest.

At Emerald City Comic Con last year they had the guy who played young Boba Fett in Episode 2 as a guest. During the hour I spent in line to meet Wil Wheaton I didn’t see a single person visit that poor man’s booth.

If this was Star Wars, I’d call her a “Second Stormtrooper on the Left” guest.

Area 93.33 “Goodman” Believes that Twilight fans shouldn’t pay but he clearly doesn’t know what hes talking about. Hes discriminating people that are “hand” models.
