News Blurbs: Dragon*con News, Hallowhedon and Convention Etiquette

Published by dreadpiraterose at 5:27 pm under Convention News Blurbs Edit This

I have a couple quick bits of news and links to share with all of you this afternoon! The first bit is that Dragon*con has just added a new programming track for historical fiction, steampunk, etc. This was seemingly just a matter of time, as steampunk cosplayers and enthusiasts have been showing up for D*C in droves lately. I am very excited to see what comes out of this programming track. The LiveJournal community “anachrodragon” will be publishing updates on the track.

Next up is a brief mention of an upcoming British convention called “Hallowhedon” (a Joss Whedon universe con). Hallowhedon is a 3-day unofficial convention to celebrate the various hit television series created by Joss Whedon. The convention will feature guests from Joss Whedon’s series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Angel”, “Firefly” (and “Serenity”) as well as his latest venture “Dollhouse”. This event will be held from October 30th - November 1st 2009 at The Thistle Hotel, Heathrow. Current Guests include: Nicholas Brendon ‘Xander’ in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, with more to be announced soon! Check out the official Hallowhedon website for more information.

And last, but certainly not least, is a fun little LiveJournal entry that has been circulating around various convention LiveJournal communities today: “Con Behavior: Clues for Free.” The entry includes a lot of convention behavior dos and don’ts as well as general expectations associated with cons. Here is a sample:

Cons attract diverse audiences, including people of different relationship styles.

- It is not appropriate to assume that just because you are [insert relationship style here] other people are too.

- It is not appropriate to imply that the way you conduct your relationship(s) is the best way and that everyone else should follow your example.

- It is not appropriate to insult other people’s lifestyle choices.

- It is not appropriate to encourage other people to break their vows and promises.

-It is not appropriate to break your vows and promises; if you must, please don’t do it with an audience who is then put in a terrible ethical position because they know the object of your betrayal.

You can read the entire entry, over at rm’s LiveJournal. All in all, some very good advice. It is also worth looking at some of the comments (and there are a lot of them!).
