The Revised Top 20 Sexy Science Fiction Costumes

Published by dreadpiraterose at 3:15 am under Costuming Edit This

Carrie Fisher from Return Of The Jedi in the famous metal bikiniI recently came across an article called the Top 20 Sexy Science Fiction Costumes at SessionMagazine.com. I don’t know who composed this list, but they got so very much wrong. Edit: It’s been brought to my attention that the SessionMagazine.com Top 20 version was copied from a top 50 article originally posted by Martin Anderson at DenofGeek.com. I wanted to make sure I edited mine to point to the original, although I am still going to disagree with his top 20. Sorry Martin!

First of all, the Princess Leia metal bikini costume from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi is not #1 on this list, which proves that the entire thing needs to be rethought. Secondly, there is nothing sexy about the female TRON costume. Period.

I may be female myself, but I have a healthy appreciation for what is sexy on another woman, and what is not. I also know a lot of hetero males which were all too happy to give their opinions on the matter. Therefore, I’ve decided to redo this tragically flawed list myself.

As you will see, I’ve moved Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia metal bikini to its rightful place at the #1 spot on the list. I’ve also corrected the gross oversight that placed Rebecca Romijn’s costume from X-Men to slot #2, up from its original position at #17 (seriously, the costume from TRON was ranked higher on the original list?). I’ve also removed a ton from the original list (Raquel Welch’s Mork and Mindy costume, really?!), and added a bunch that were wrongly left off.

I’ll leave it to you all to decide who has the more accurate list. But seriously, how can you leave off Jennifer Garner’s Elektra costume? Take a look for yourself:

The Convention Fans Revised Top 20 Sexy Science Fiction Costumes List

20. Dana Gillespie - The People That Time Forgot (1977): Okay, this one can stay on the list, but I’m knocking it back from spot 19 to spot 20. Yeah, the outfit is skimpy, but it’s also brown and bland. But skimpy. So it can stay.

Dana Gillespie from The People That Time Forgot

19. Lynda Carter - Wonder Woman (1976): Come on man, everyone wanted a piece of Lynda back in the day. How was it that her costume was left off the original list? It may not be the hottest costume ever, but it was flattering on her figure, and revealed plenty of curves. Besides, the fire engine red boots were rockin’.

Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman

18. Gigi Edgley - Farscape (1999): This is another costume left off the original list. Not only was Gigi Egdley’s costume left off the list, but no other characters from Farscape were represented either. Gigi’s costume gave her a great neckline, and accentuated her other assets nicely as well. The costume was totally sexy, especially when comparing it to some of the costumes on the original list.

Gigi Edgley as Chiana from Farscape

17. Claudia Black - Stargate SG-1 (US TV, 2007): I moved dear Claudia up a few spots. She’s stunning in every outfit she wore on SG-1. And she has a killer body. Bravo to her costume designers for always keeping that in mind. They may be basic sometimes, but they were sexy.

Claudia Black from Stargate SG-1

16. Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element (1997): I argued with my male friends about this one. My initial reaction was that Milla’s costume from Fifth Element should have been higher than #6 (her place on the original list). But then the guys said the costume looked like band aids. Ew. It gets points for showing off her figure, but now I can’t get that band aid analogy out of my mind.

Milla Jovovich from Fifth Element

15. Ashley Scott - Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001): It’s skin tight, flattering, and although it covers her up, it leaves little to the imagination at the same time.

 Ashley Scott from A.I.

14. Ornella Muti - Flash Gordon (1980): Believe it or not, this was actually #1 on the original list. Yeah, it’s skimpy, but it’s also ugly. Even if it did preceded the famous Princes Leia metal bikini, Leia’s was way sexier. Opulent does not always mean sexy.

 Ornella Muti from Flash Gordon

13. Jenny Agutter - Logan’s Run (1976): The costume doesn’t have much too it. It’s basically draped fabric, but it is revealing. It’s basically just like Leia’s costume from Star Wars: IV with less fabric.

 Jenny Agutter from Logan’s Run

12. Morena Baccarin - Firefly (2002) & Serenity (2005): Morena’s character, Inara, does change costumes quite frequently in the Firefly television show, and the movie Serenity, but almost every single one is sexy as hell. She wasn’t running around in any metal bikini’s, but the dresses were always extremely flattering on Morena’s figure. They were the sensual kind of sexy.

Morena Baccarin as Inara from Firefly/Serenity

11. Joanna Cassidy - Blade Runner (1982): It doesn’t personally appeal to me, but the men I consulted said it was fine to leave on the list. In fact, they voted it up. Hard to ignore a costume that’s basically just sequins and shiny things glued on the naked body.

 Joanna Cassidy from Blade Runner

10. Persis Khambatta - Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979): How was Persis’ Lieutenant Ilia from Star Trek: TMP left off the original list? The costume was sexy without being obscene. It had that great plunging neck line and extremely short hem. Persis looked absolutely stunning in it. Sexy for sure.

 The Motion Picture

9. Carrie-Anne Moss - The Matrix (1999): Another one left off the original list. Helloooo? I’d say the original list maker had a thing against leather, but he did have Michelle Pfeiffer’s Cat Woman in the top 3. But Trinity was totally sexy in The Matrix. Period.

 Carrie-Anne Moss from The Matrix

8. Michelle Pfeiffer - Batman Returns (1992): The only reason why Michelle’s leather get up is ranked higher than Carrie-Anne’s is because of the visible stitches and the head piece. They do add something to the costume that gives it an edge over her’s.

 Michelle Pfeiffer from Batman Returns

7. Milla Jovovich - Ultraviolet (2006): This was one of the first costumes mentioned by my male friends when I asked them what was missing from the original list. It was hard to choose which costume to highlight, but each one was stunning and made Milla’s stomach look incredible.

 Milla Jovovich from Ultraviolet

6. Monica Bellucci - The Matrix Revolutions (2003): No one has made a corset look better. She was originally listed as #10 on the other list, but I have elevated her to #6. Come on! That costume must have been sewn onto her!

Monica Bellucci from The Matrix Revolutions

5. Jeri Ryan - Star Trek: Voyager (US TV, 1997 - 2001): Speaking of costumes having to be sewn on, we come to the infamous silver catsuit worn by Jeri Ryan. This was originally #14, and that is a travesty. I may not be a fan of the series or the character, but even I cannot deny the sexiness of this.

 Voyager

4. Jennifer Garner - Elektra (2005): Another one left off the list! I just don’t understand! The movie may have sucked, but Jennifer Garner has never looked better in a movie. This little red number was sexy as hell, and an extremely flattering adaptation of the original comic book version of the costume.

 Jennifer Garner as Elektra

3. Malin Akerman - Watchmen (2009): Okay, I can forgive the original list for leaving off Malin’s  Watchmen costume, considering the movie hasn’t even come out yet. However, having seen the trailer and promotional images, you cannot deny how sexy this costume is. The boots alone would make a grown man sweat a little. Malin is making superhero spandex work for her like no one else.

 Malin Akerman from Watchmen

2. Rebecca Romijn - X-Men (2000): Can we count air brushing as a costume? Because I’m pretty sure that’s most of what this “costume” is. Who cares! Rebecca has never looked better. This belongs in the #2 spot for sure.

 Rebecca Romijn from X-Men

1. Carrie Fisher - Return Of The Jedi (1983): This is exactly where the metal bikini belongs. Number 1. ‘Nuff said.

Carrie Fisher from Return Of The Jedi in the famous metal bikini

So, what do you think? Who has the better list?

How could you dare removing Barbarella from the list !?!? Epic Fail!

  2. dreadpirateroseon 23 Feb 2009 at 9:00 am edit this

    @ AA

    That’s sarcasm… right?

  3. steveon 23 Feb 2009 at 9:44 am edit this

    They both suck.

    Move out of your basement.

  4. dreadpirateroseon 23 Feb 2009 at 9:47 am edit this

    @ steve

Thanks for the advice, steve, but I don’t live in anyone’s basement and never have. How’s your garage apartment… er… I mean “carriage house”… working out for you?

  5. steveon 23 Feb 2009 at 10:18 am edit this

Wow… you’re comebacks suck just as bad as your list.

Don’t you just love trolls. -rolls eyes at above two commentors-

I had fun reading that! :) It’s clear, though, that it’s not only the costume but the person in it that creates the whole sexy/sensuous vibe…I’m not familiar with quite a lot of the characters (unfortunately :( ) but it seems that in quite a few cases something not overtly sexy works out really well.

  7. dreadpirateroseon 23 Feb 2009 at 10:25 am edit this

    @ jennkei

Indeed! I don’t think just anyone can pull off Persis’ costume from TMP, for example.

As to the Troll: It’s okay, I feel bad for my friend steve there. He not only clicked the link, but read through it, commented once, and came back for more. He’s clearly in nerd denial. ;)

Pretty good list, although i think Sean Young’s character, Rachael should be on the list. Also maybe Barbarella, as Jane Fonda was hotter than a stolen pistol in that film.

Carrie Anne Moss always looks so wooden in that film, I never thought she was attractive in that film or any film up until Fido for that matter.

  9. Jayon 23 Feb 2009 at 11:09 am edit this

There is ZERO sexy about Lynda Carter’s big blue granny panties!!

  10. dreadpirateroseon 23 Feb 2009 at 11:12 am edit this

    @ Jay

Darling, you know I love you dearly, but I’m not sure you and I could agree on anything remotely relating to this subject, haha. ;)

Besides, Lynda was put on the list in part because a certainly family of mine has always had a thing for her. I just had to include her! ;)

  11. dreadpirateroseon 23 Feb 2009 at 11:13 am edit this

    @ Spooky

Barbarella was on the original list in the top 20. Maybe top 30 I could agree with you on, but top 20? Eh. Not so much.

Of course, this whole thing is widely subjective. As the comments make abundantly clear. ;)

  12. Nikoon 23 Feb 2009 at 11:48 am edit this

I disagree with some on both lists, but it’s a very subjective topic. I think we can all agree that there are plenty of hot and sexy sci-fi women.

  13. Spookyon 23 Feb 2009 at 12:43 pm edit this

    @Dreadpiraterose

It is subjective for sure, but your list is clearly thought out and well conceived. I think i might also add the girl who played Trilian on the BBC version of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I had a crush on her as well as Sean Young in Blade Runner. I think those would be in my top 10. However this is your Top 10. You still have a good list.

  14. Alexon 23 Feb 2009 at 2:11 pm edit this

    It’s “Watchmen.”

    Not “The Watchmen”

  15. dreadpirateroseon 23 Feb 2009 at 2:18 pm edit this

    @ Alex

Whoops! I let my Watchmen n00b card show a little. Fixed!

Princess Ardala but not Col. Deering? What were you thinking? And how on Earth can you ignore Lt. Uhura’s outfit from the classic Star Trek eposiode “Mirror, Mirror”? You want leather catsuits, look no further then Mrs. Emma Peel from the “Avengers” Bikini, try the iconic one worn by Vampiria! Or how about the silver micro mini uniforms as worn on the SHADO Moon Base from “UFO”? All that is just off the top of my head, any active check of even a handful of sci-fi B movies would yield many many more sexy outfits… Hummmm, I seem to have suddenly found new purpose is my life.

  17. dreadpirateroseon 23 Feb 2009 at 2:59 pm edit this

    @ IchabodCrane

    Good call on Uhura!

As for the rest… I’m sure we could easily do a top 200 list without too much difficulty. ;)

  18. Ryanon 23 Feb 2009 at 3:30 pm edit this

Two quick things: one, Monica Bellucci deserves to be higher on the list, looking at her in that spray painted on corset, I mean come on, just the definition of sexy. And two, maybe it’s just me but Mila Jovovich and Carrie Anne Moss need to switch places, Mila is way hotter in Fifth Element in the band aids and that orange rubber thing than Carrie could ever be. Granted I may be jaded after watching her and Keanu Reaves naked pasty white ass in Revolutions, just turrible.

Is that the Jay I know, always making trouble?

Anyway, I like the revised list. Morena is a must.

I understand that Marina Sirtis is controversial given the more recent productions…but men loved her in Season I. Lots of tight costumes.

  20. rubicoon 24 Feb 2009 at 1:39 am edit this

this list is completely illegitimate without #6 from battlestar galactica

  21. SJUon 25 Feb 2009 at 2:41 pm edit this

    What about T’Pol?

  22. PopularOutcaston 26 Mar 2009 at 10:11 pm edit this

You forgot to include Angelina Jolie and the Tomb Raider costume.

  23. Greyon 15 Apr 2009 at 11:22 pm edit this

I’m going to have to agree with Malin Ackerman’s Silk Spectre costume — EXTREMELY hawt. Especially the boots ;)
