Con Vids: Doctor Who Theme/Imperial March Performed on Twin Tesla Coils
Chattacon happened a few weekends ago, which means a lot of great video footage has been making its way onto sites like YouTube. One of the guests at the con was ArcAttack, creators of the original “Singing Tesla Coils”. Now, I may be a geek, but sometimes even I have to look things up. According to Wikipedia:
“A Tesla coil is a type of resonant transformer circuit invented by Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla around 1891. It is generally used to generate very high voltage, low current, high frequency alternating current electricity.”
ArcAttack uses such coils to “act as separate synchronized instruments” for their musical performances, because they “produce an electrical arc similar to a continuous lightning bolt which put out a crisply distorted square wave sound reminiscent of the early days of synthesizers.”
Well then! You learn something new every day. Chattacon 2009’s attendees were lucky enough to see a performance from ArcAttack, which included a cover of the famous Doctor Who theme song:

Here’s ArcAttack doing the Star Wars “Imperial March” at the same con:
