Top 10 Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Geeks and Convention Junkies

Published by dreadpiraterose at 9:44 am under Convention Related Edit This

I know you’re just now putting the winter holiday decorations away, but Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. For crying out loud, Hallmark and your local grocery store have been selling Valentine’s Day candy since December 26th. If you haven’t started thinking about a gift for your loved one, you better get on it! But never fear fellow fellow con goers and geeks! Just as I assisted you during the holidays, I shall assist you in your time of need now. I present to you, the Top 10 Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Geeks and Convention Junkies!

1. Geeky Jewelry

Steampunk Ring by Steam Powered Rings

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you may have already seen my post about these steampunk rings. If not, here is the link again. This artist is absolutely amazing, and one of these rings would make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift for anyone - male or female. Especially if they are at all into steampunk. Either way, they are damn cool looking.

2.  Kick Ass Costume Accessories

Convention season is in full swing now, which means if your guy/gal is a cosplayer, they are probably working feverishly on their costume. Why not surprise them with a great accessory? The gift could be anything from a cool piece of jewelry to match their costume (see #1), to a custom piece designed just for them. For example, a friend of mine got a great latex/foam staff for her Live Action Role-Play (LARP) costume as a gift once. It was one of those pieces she hadn’t bought for herself because of the cost, but it made for a thoughtful gift from her boyfriend.

3. Upgraded/VIP Badge

A lot of conventions are now offering “VIP” or upgradable badges for conventions. This usually involves getting to skip lines, or some kind of special seating at big events. Why not splurge and get one for your loved one, or perhaps a pair for you both? You could be rather clever about it, and do up a little certificate on the computer to print out, that way you could actually hand her something on V-Day.

4. That Amazing Statue At the Comic Book Store

Captain America statueIf you attend conventions, there’s a good chance you also frequent the local comic book store. I would wager that almost every single one has a display case full of statues. Everything from Captain America to a bust of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They are a bit pricey (usually), but it is Valentine’s Day (and I never said these were cheap gift ideas). Splurge! Get that kick ass statue for your special someone. If you’re really cool, you’ll let them display it prominently in your dwelling, and not relegate it to the game room.

5.  A Cool Item to Get Autographed at the Con

If you know your loved one has a favorite celebrity guest appearing at an upcoming con, you could buy something unique for them to get signed. It could be anything from a rare action figure, to a special edition DVD, or a comic book.  The possibilities are pretty endless. Check out your local comic book store, or even eBay, for ideas.

6. Willingly Subject Yourself to Their Favorite Anime/Movie/Fandom/etc.

You may hate Yaoi with a passion, but sometimes the best gift you can give is the willingness to watch something they love WITH them.  Go an extra step and get some popcorn, or even make dinner. Let them share their fandom with you for that night, and make it special.

7.  First Issue/Special Edition Comic or Graphic Novel

Does your loved one have a series of comics or graphic novels they love? Do they own that coveted first issue and/or special edition? Seek it out and snag them a copy. Go the extra step and get it framed, mounted, or displayed in a special way. If you end up looking for a first issue for a comic book fan (and aren’t one yourself), make sure you educate yourself on the finer points of comic book condition grading. You don’t want to end up with a poor quality copy.

8. Gaming Headset

This idea is for the gamers: get your loved one a nice headset. These headsets are ideal if the one you love plays MMOs (that’s a massively mulitplayer online game to those not in “the know”). Not only does it make playing a game like World of Warcraft easier, but it makes it more fun too. Just think, now they can sign into Ventrilo, and talk to all the other cool players they met at Blizzcon this year!

LED Flashing Sweetheart Kit

9. LED Binary Watch

For the geeky male in your life, consider the LED Binary Watch from ThinkGeek.com. It is perfect for the guy who wants to proclaim his geekdom in LED lit style. The price is pretty reasonable too: $69.99. You can even choose between blue LEDs and red LEDs!

10. LED Flashing Sweetheart Kit

ThinkGeek.com also comes through for geeky ladies gifts. For just $9.99, you can purchase this LED Flashing Sweetheart Kit, which “contains a circuit board, 28 LEDs and various diodes and resistors you solder together (with your own two hands) to create a lovely romantic knick knack. ” Isn’t is precious?

Feel free to post your own gift ideas in the comments! And have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Hey, I think the list is pretty good. And not just because I want that ring from etsy and have loved that jewelers stuff for a while.

I just received a signed photo from Jewel Staite this Christmas, and I gave my boyfriend a new LARP sword last year. Thumbs up from me.
