A Positive Perception of Otaku

A curious blog entry appeared on a blog for LA Weekly yesterday, called “Otaku Art Stars: Anime Conventions Are Breeding A New Generation of Artists” by Liz Ohanesian. It immediately caught my attention, because as many con goers know, media coverage of otaku usually isn’t that favorable. The media loves to pick out the the 300 pound man wearing a Sailor Moon outfit, and act like he is indicative of the entire fandom. It’s lazy and sensational journalism. So, when an article like Liz’s comes along, I take notice.

Her article was in response to Anime Los Angeles, which occurred this past weekend. Her argument is that these anime conventions have allowed young arists and designers a place to display their work and express themselves. And they are high school and college aged at that! The anime and Japanese lolita genres have inspired creative individuals, and the conventions have enabeled them to act on their creative impulses, and even see some financial success.

The blog entry has some great photos, and some personal examples of these creative otaku from the convention. I encourage you to check it out, and be sure to leave Liz a comment, telling her how much you appreciate the positive coverage of anime fans and con goers!
