Con Vids: “I Didn’t Want a Little Thing Like Chest Hair to Hold Me Back”
I absolutely love browsing YouTube for videos filmed at conventions. Sometimes these videos are a great example of the sense of camaraderie and joy that fandom brings people. Seeing so many people with common interests getting together and having fun is a wonderful thing.
On the other hand, sometimes the of the coverage of conventions by outsiders focuses on the most bizare convention attendees, and ignores the positive aspects of conventions and fandom.
Check out this coverage of Star Wars Celebration IV 2007 by Newspeak TV, specifically the interview with “Man Leia,” and tell me what you think:
Do people like “Man Leia” do the rest of fans a diservice? Does coverage like this only hurt the already stereotyped perception of fandom and cons? Or is this just a fun video that doesn’t mean anything one way or the other? Tell me what you think!
