Feedback: Oni-Con 2008
A few weeks ago, I did a convention profile of Oni-Con 2008, which occurred December 18-21 in Houston, Texas. I’ve since had a chance to talk to some people who attended the convention. I asked for their feedback, and below is some of what they told me. These are the views of specific attendees who provided feedback to this blog, and they do not reflect the view or opinion of the Convention Fans blog (I did not even attend).
The Positives:
- Had an extensive collection of vendors, as well as a variety of artists (who were “willing to work with attendees on prices, with some even doing commissions”)
- The location was a clean, well maintained facility, with a full time staff and security, that kept things running smoothly
- Wide variety of guests to see
- Staff was friendly, and showed people where everything was
- DiO Distraught Overlord put on a great concert performance
- The “Gore Make-Up” panel was really cool
The Negatives:
- Security needs to be upgraded (apparently there were rumors of hotel hall destruction by con attendees)
- Some of the annual activities are “getting old” and need to be refreshed/updated
- Some events were not on the schedule and “for the most part passed unnoticed”
- The convention was “terribly unprepared for the amount of people who were in line to buy [their] passes the first day” (one attendee reported that they spent four hours in line!)
- Food was so expensive at the con that “it was impossible to even get a snack and a soda without breaking the bank” (see the article 8 Easy Convention Food Ideas next time you head to a con to avoid this problem)
- Sunday was “a bore”
As always, if you have pictures or feedback about a convention, feel free to post it in a comment!
