Convention Profile: Ohayocon 2009

Published by dreadpiraterose at 12:02 am under Upcoming Conventions Edit This

Ohio anime fans, this posting is for you! On the weekend of January 30 to February 1, Ohayocon will be taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Unfortunately, the host hotel has already sold out their rooms at the convention rate, but the Ohayocon website does provide a list of other hotels nearby. This convention is definitely Full Metal Panic! Cosplayer (Photo by RisingSun.net, used with permission)not new, having been in existence since 2001, so you can probably expect a pretty decent crowd.

This anime convention has a fairly standard line up of convention activities. There will be cosplay/costume contests, an artist alley, a dealer room, anime music video (AMV) contest, panel discussions, workshops, and more. In fact, Gaia Online will be attending the convention this year, and they will have a special series of events dedicated to the website. They usually sponsor a dance, or other social activity at the cons they attend. The exact details will become available as the convention gets closer, so keep checking Gaia Online or Ohayocon’s website for updates.

The guest list for Ohayocon is fairly extensive for a convention that is strictly anime in focus, and includes a lot of great voice acting talent. The voice acting line up includes Aaron Dismuke (Fullmetal Alchemist), Greg Ayres (Chrono Crusade), Christopher Ayres (Gantz), Rikki Simons (Invader ZIM), Mike McFarland (Dragon Ball Z), Brett Weaver (Sorcerer Hunters), and Vic Mignogna (Fullmetal Alchemist). This year’s con will mark the ninth appearance by voice actress Tiffany Grant (best known for her work in Neon Genesis Evangelion), who has voiced characters for FUNimation and ADV in approximately 1000 TV episodes, OVAs & movies. Wow!

Other guests include artists and industry insiders, such as Matt Greenfield (co-founder of ADV), and Tavisha Wolfgarth-Simons (Studio Tavicat). You can see the entire guest line up on the official Ohayocon website.

Despite the fact that the convention is quickly approaching, the website still has a lot of information that needs to be filled in, namely in regard to programming. If you’re on the fence about going, you may want to keep checking back to see what gets added to the site as the con gets closer. Oddly enough, AnimeCons.com has more information about this convention than the con’s official website.

So, how much will it cost you to attend this thing? According to AnimeCons.com, the prices are as follows: $45 for the weekend; $20 Fri; $30 Sat; $10 Sun. Pre-registration is still going on until January 10th, and that price is $40 for the weekend.
If you’re attending this convention, be sure to report back with photos and feedback!

Almost all con registrations are per person, but some do offer group discounts.
