Top 5 Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas for Geeks and Convention Junkies

Published by dreadpiraterose at 6:53 am under Convention Related Edit This

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you probably saw my entry about the Top 10 Holiday Gift Ideas for Geeks and Convention Junkies. While that list was perfectly good a few weeks ago when it was originally posted, a lot of the gifts suggested won’t work for you last minute shoppers. Behold! A list of gift ideas that do not require any internet shopping! And since you only have one more weekend left until Christmas, you better hop to it!

1. Gift Cards for Stores Geeks Love

Why not pick up a gift card to a store that special geek in your life might enjoy? Depending on what type of geek (anime, gamer, Trekkie, etc.)  the gift recipient is, you could do something like a World of Warcraft play time card, a gift card to EB Games, Hot Topic, Best Buy, Suncoast, or any major DVD retailer. For the gadget lovers, there’s always Brookstone too.

Pirateology Book2. Books

Is your loved one a fan of manga? A D&D fan, perhaps? Are they just generally into fantasy or sci-fi? Give the publishing industry a hand and pick up a book as a present (really, they need the hand). Pick up a set of books! There are a lot of fun books out there that make great gifts for anyone who has a basic interest in fantasy, like the Pirateology or Dragonology books. You should also consider looking through the selections at used book stores, where sometimes you can find rare or unique items.

3. Hallmark Ornaments

As I mentioned in the Top 10 Holiday Gift Ideas for Geeks and Convention Junkies entry, Hallmark has a wide variety of geeky ornaments available. They should still have some in stock! But your time is running out. The Valentine’s Day stuff was probably delivered last week and is ready to replace Christmas at the drop of a hat. You can also try Hallmark’s competitors (are there any left?), which may have licensing agreements with other studios/companies, and therefore different selection.

4. DVDs

Now, before running out and buying DVDs for a geeky someone (or even books for that matter), you may want to peruse their shelves to avoid getting any duplicates. But DVDs can make great gifts, especially if you’re willing to splurge for a nice boxset. Those are the kinds of things people don’t buy for themselves because of the cost, therefore making them great gift options.  If you aren’t sure what to buy, you can always revisit gift idea #1 (a gift card), or simply get a gift receipt with your purchase.

5. Car Accessories

Even though I cry a little on the inside about it, there is some benefit to some geeky things becoming more mainstream. For example, you can easily get products like car accessories for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, Nintendo, The Princess Bride, anime (popular ones anyway), Hello Kitty, The Nightmare Before Christmas, World of Warcraft,  Harry Potter, and more. Hot Topic is actually a great place to find this stuff, but you can also take a look at a Spencer’s Gifts, FYE, or even an auto parts store. Wal-Mart may even carry something worth looking at (they have general fantasy car stuff like dragon floor mats and the like). There’s also the option of a vanity plate for the front of their car. A lot of malls have kiosks that sell these, and windshield decals, which can be made on the spot. They usually have some geeky choices, especially if that special someone is into superheros (namely Batman or Superman).

There’s nothing better than geeky love this holiday season! Have a good one!

One of the best gifts I ever got was the book Good Omens from two close friends. I find a lot of people are afraid to get books as gifts, but its not as hard as people think

I second books! But I have quite a few friends who are bleh at books. -wry- If it’s a fellow booklover, though, then definitely. Which’s why I’m loving bookdepository at the moment…^^

I’ve never liked gift cards. -sighs- Takes all the mystery away. XD
