Bring Out Yer (Un)dead!
The more time I spend looking at costumes on cosplay.com, the more jealous I am of everyone who got to attend Blizzcon this past year. I’m sure the programming was great (and I know we all wish we had the Blizzcon mount), but I what I feel I missed out on most were the costumes. World of Warcraft costumes can be extremely difficult to make, and evenĀ more difficult to make well.
A lot of the characters require make up or latex prosthetics, and the outfits themselves usually resemble armor, or extremely detailed cloth. And we haven’t even talked about the weapons yet!
That’s why I am so impressed with people like”Saurus” from cosplay.com, who debuted her Undead rogue costume at Blizzcon 2008 (her very first time at Blizz). The costume is based on one of her “alts” (a secondary character in Warcraft - one that isn’t your main), Noir.
“I started out with a Troll huntress and ended up with a [Blood Elf] priestess as my main. I have a fair case of altitis [creating a ton of alts] and this costume was based off one of my alts that I quickly fell in love with, Noir. My goal was to focus on portraying the race rather than focus on armor.”
The incredible job on the face is actually why I fell in love with Saurus’ costume. It was so striking, and unlike anything I had ever seen before from a costumer. I just had to find out how she did it.
“The ’skin’ on the face was made from Ben Nye scaring wax. I used it to sculpt a ’skin flap’ around the edge of my face and sealed it in liquid latex. The make up was airbrushed Mehron body paint and details done with eyeshadow.”
As for the armor, the cincher, gloves and boot tops were purchased and modified. Her mom lent her some assistance on the sewing machine by making the pants. Like Lindsay, who I interviewed because of her Blood Elf Priestess for Blizzcon, Saurus also used craft foam to help create parts of her costume, namely the the shoulders and belts, which were then covered in pleather. The belts and shoulder straps were subsequently hand sewn on.
The typical reaction to her costume at the convention?
“It was pretty overwhelming actually. I wasn’t expecting the response that I got. Everyone told me they loved it. My sister (she was dressed as a Draenei) and I literally couldn’t walk five steps without being asked for pictures. I was extremely flattered.”
Even though she doesn’t play Warcraft anymore, Saurus will most certainly continue to be recognized in the costuming community as having one of the best “Undead” Warcraft costumes out there. If you want to see some of her other costumes (including a fantastic Lydia from Beetlejuice), check out her cosplay.com profile.

Unrelated comment: Since it’s such a small word it may interest you to know I attended my first convention last yet in Philly! Even went all out and dressed up. It was an enlightening experience lol.
It was FaerieCon plus the Bad Faeries Ball!
I spotted this on the category page. Very eyecatching.
Thanks for adding me to links! I’ll add you to my blogroll too.
