Convention Profile: Anime Los Angeles 2009

Vash (Trigun, photo by RisingSun.net and used w/ permission)Attention Los Angeles anime fans! You have less than 20 days before the Anime Los Angeles 2009 convention! This convention takes place January 2 - January 4, 2009 at the LAX Marriott. Unfortunately, if you want a room for the convention, you are running out of time. December 18th is the last day to reserve a room at the convention rate, so you better hurry!

Registration for this convention can be done online, or at the door. And the prices are as follows: (pre-reg) $45 for the weekend, $40 for students; (at the door) $50 for the weekend, $20 for Friday or Sunday, and $30 for Saturday only.

One of the cool deals this convention offers is the “Parent-in-Tow” program. Each paid member under the age of 15 may bring a grown-up for free. This applies to any grown-up: a relative (step-parent, aunt or uncle, grandparent, etc.), a friend of the family, a neighbor, or a teacher. (This sounds like a wonderful idea!)

Another great thing about this convention, is that it has a con suite. Essentially, the suite offers free food to convention attendees. This is always a great bonus, as it helps cut down on the cost of attending the con.

In terms of programming, Anime Los Angeles has plenty to keep you busy! There will be the usual dealer’s room, cosplay/costume contests, panel discussions, guest stars (including Johnny Yong Bosch, Zac Bertschy, Tadao Tomomatsu, & Scott Ramsoomair), and gaming.

By far, one of my favorite events at any anime convention is an Anime Music Video (AMV) competition, and Anime Los Angeles has one! You can see a list of past winners of the 2008 AMV competition here.

One of the unique pieces of programming at this convention will be it’s 24 hour Filk Contest. Filk is taking a popular tune and re-writing the lyrics using some fandom as a basis. Competitors will be given 24 hours to write a tune after being assigned a topic, and they will perform the tunes Saturday night.
